Greenock Morton defender nets crucial goal as Morton rescue late point in Ayrshire in Dougie Imrie’s first match in charge.

Alan Lithgow’s goal proved to seal a point for an energised Greenock Morton side who are fighting to stay clear of the bottom of the Scottish Championship. Lithgow who has been a pivotal part for the club since signing from Livingston earlier this year was on hand to finish the year with a encouraging result for the club. Yesterday’s game also saw the first in charge under new boss Dougie Imrie.

Rory MacKenzie had Kilmarnock ahead just before the half hour mark through an excellent strike and even though Tommy Wright’s men were dominant in the opening period, they couldn’t double their lead.

Kilmarnock’s missed chances did prove to be costly in the second half as with just over twenty minutes left on the clock, central defender Lithgow glanced his header past Hemmings and into the net to level things up in front of their new boss.

Morton were given confidence after scoring and received even more after Killie keeper Jack Sanders was shown a straight red for a cynical challenge after losing control of the ball. In the end, Lithgow’s goal seemed to be enough for Morton to take points on the day getting Dougie Imrie’s reign off to a positive start.
