Grant Savoury continued his impressive form this season as he netted once again to help Queen’s to a 3-2 victory at Soltitude this afternoon. Cliftonville provided a stern challenge for Owen Coyle’s men which they overcame, making it just the second time the Spiders have eliminated a non-Scottish opponent from the competition – the last being The New Saints on penalties in the 2018/2019 season.
Savoury netted within three minutes when Malachi Boateng headed Cliftonville’s cross clear to Williamson who flicked the ball to the feet of Savoury 30 yards from his own goal. Savoury took off, and just kept going and going, with his blistering pace leaving two home defenders in his wake and when the midfielder reached Cliftonville’s box he slotted a low shot out of the reach of Fynn Talley and into the back of the net.
Scott Williamson was also on hand with Queen’s second of the afternoon but both goals were cancelled out by Colin Coates and then Jonathan Addis, shortly after the break.
The score line was evenly matched with only 20 minutes remaining and as extra time was looming, Dom Thomas grabbed what proved to be the winner with a fierce strike from 16 yards out.
Grant did have the ball in the net for the second time after being teed-up by teammate Lewis Moore, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
The Fourth Round draw is still to be made due to two Third Round ties yet to be completed. It’s back to league duty for Queen’s Park next week as they host Raith Rovers on Saturday.
