An interesting Quarter-Final tie was played out in Dumfries last night, with both Queen of the South and Greenock Morton eyeing up a semi-final place due to be played early next year at Hampden Park. Both sides who are fighting to stay in the Scottish Championship this season have already faced off twice this campaign, a 3-2 away win for Queen of the South at Cappielow back in August and a goalless draw in the same fixture at the end of October.

The home side opened the scoring through Max Johnston just before the half hour mark. The 17-year old’s swinging effort seemed to come off Jack Hamilton’s hand even though his original effort looked goal bound.

A tense battle and chances for both sides in the opening half meant Alan Johnston’s men held a narrow lead at the break and even once the action restarted there was very little between the sides who both currently sit on 12 points in the league.

Queens kept pushing forward and even though had chances to kill the game off, it was Morton who levelled late on. Gavin Reilly whipped in a cross that met the head of Alan Lithgow who nestled his header into the corner which looked to have rescued a late equaliser for the away side.

Two minutes later, after staying in the game and netting a late equaliser, Morton conceded a second and it was Ruari Paton who grabbed what turned out to be the winner. The winger fell on top of the ball before getting up, beating his man, and toe poking an effort into the corner from just outside the area.
